The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first generic drug to treat heartburn in adults over the age of 40 and to help prevent heartburn from recurring.
The FDA’s approval follows an investigation of the market for Nexium (esomeprazole) capsules, the brand name for Prilosec, the generic version of Nexium (esomeprazole), and its extended-release formulation, Prilosec (omeprazole).
The FDA has received more than 2,000 reports of serious adverse events related to the use of Prilosec, including an increased risk of bleeding. The FDA has also requested more information about the safety profile of Nexium and Prilosec.
The company that developed the drug, Amgen, said it was “exciting to learn more about the safety and efficacy of this medication,” and that its sales have increased in the last five years. Amgen has about $2.3 billion in revenue.
Nexium is also used to treat heartburn (heartburn that occurs in the stomach and esophagus).
The FDA has not received a copy of the results of the study.
Nexium is also sold as Zithromax, the generic version of Amneal, the brand name for Zithromax.
Amgen is the only company to develop an antibiotic and has been sold by Novo Nordisk.
AstraZeneca is the largest drug maker in the U. S., with more than 12,000 U. S. employees, more than $2.5 billion in annual revenue. The company said it expects to bring in $5.4 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to the F. D. A.’s annual reports. AstraZeneca is the second-largest drugmaker in the U. S., with more than 18,000 U. employees.
Amgen’s sales are also growing, with the company said, in the last five years, that the company has “digitally increased in the last three months.”
Nexium is also sold as Nexium 20mg, the generic version of Prilosec, the brand name for Prilosec, and Prilosec 20mg, the extended-release version of Nexium.
Nexium has been approved for use in adults.
The FDA’s approval is for use in children under the age of 18, who must take an effective medical condition. A study conducted in 2010 found that children ages 11 to 17 may be at an increased risk of a number of serious adverse events related to heartburn.
The FDA said it will continue to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drug, which is approved to treat acid-related symptoms in children.
Amgen will continue to market the drug as a generic and the U. market for the product is estimated at about $5.5 billion.
